The Offering… Book 3 in The Pledge Trilogy by Kimberly Derting…

The third and final book in this series really was the best… I’m struggling on a star rating and I’m going with 4, possibly 4.5 stars…

This one was action packed starting with a dramatic scene where Sabara’s lover Niko betrays Xander when they visit Queen Elena to talk peace between Ludania and Astonia… a gruesome message is then sent back to Charlie and we’re not sure if Xander is dead or alive… Charlie then sneaks away from the palace and embarks upon a mission with Eden and Brook to rescue Xander (if he is still alive) and sort things out with Elena...

There weren’t really any plot twists as such. We as readers, get parts of the story from the different character's POV so we mostly know what's happening, but it was gripping, fun and entertaining. It was also emotional and upsetting in parts too which rings true to the Dystopian genre it's labelled under…

Despite what the synopsis says, Charlie’s still struggling with Sabara’s essence within her and I like how it’s depicted, we definitely see her personality, bravado and confidence grow… We meet some new characters and I enjoyed the POV shifts throughout… The only thing I wasn’t fussed on was the romance side of the story… it just wasn’t happening for me I’m afraid… being a big romance junkie, for me it’s a fundamental part of the story hence marking it down slightly… there were so many great opportunities there – Max and Charlie, Brook and Aron, Xander and Sage, even Sabara and Niko… but it didn't seem ‘heartfelt’ for lack of a better word… the writing was good but it didn’t make my eyes fill up or my heart flutter… that being said, I really wanted more from Xander and Sage and would love to hear their story.

Everything seemed to get wrapped up in the end with no loose ends, although I would have liked to know what became of Sebastian, the little *expletive* but the ending was good and satisfactory with a nice epilogue to round things off...

4 Star Review of The Essence... Book Two in The Pledge Trilogy by Kimberly Derting

This second instalment in The Pledge trilogy is a complicated book to review… this will most probably contain spoilers, which is something I don’t usually like doing but I’m afraid I can’t explain my thoughts and feelings about the book in any other way…

First of all - I didn’t love The Pledge… I gave it 3.5 stars as I found it lacking in a lot of places, but the storyline was good so I thought I’d give this one a shot and see if it improved any, and yes it did in some ways, but in others it was still sorta mediocre…

Most of this book is spent travelling… on horseback, train and boat, through the Scablands where we meet new, likeable and not so likeable characters. Charlie and her crew end up at The Summit, where she meets a host of Queens from other countries who are all rather odd and have their own powers, she discovers that one of her men is a traitor, internally battles the Essence of Sabara for control over her body, tries to resist Sabara’s lover Niko and ends up in a bad situation with Brook’s father which doesn’t end well!

Charlie and Max’s relationship doesn’t really develop much from the first book as they spend an awful lot of it apart and, unfortunately we didn’t get much character growth from Max either… there’s also something stiff in their interactions, maybe it’s the way the scenes are written but I don’t feel much connection with them from a readers POV.
Charlie vs Sabara – I liked this element of the story a lot… I found Charlie’s struggle for power over her mind and body to be well written… the dreams/memories that Charlie experienced gave us good insight into what Sabara’s life was like and I found myself empathising with her… I also felt the passion in her and Niko’s relationship and I’m actually hoping that they get a HEA of their own, without Charlie’s body present obviously!
I knew I was going to like Aron… we get to know him a little better in this and I’m looking forward to more from him in the next book, along with Brook of course who is probably my favourite female character, I’m also hoping her and Charlie mend their relationship as it seemed a bit bleak when I finished this…
Unfortunately there was a distinct lack of Xander in this book but I’m hoping to get more in the next one.  Also, the Assassin… I guessed who it was from their chapter and was a bit disappointed with how that situation ended… hopefully it will be resolved on the final one (fingers crossed)

Anyhoo… like I said, the storyline and writing were good but, there were a lot of inconsistencies and it was only the last 70% of the book where I couldn’t put my kindle down… it’s a nice Young Adult, Fantasy Romance and I will be reading the next one shortly to see how it ends…

3.5 Star Review for The Pledge... Book One in The Pledge Trilogy by Kimberly Derting

I wasn’t 100% sure what I was going to get with this… I got it for free somehow, (I don’t remember how or when exactly, but it feels like an age ago) and it’s been sitting on my Kindle ever since… anyway, it felt like the right time to read it and I was pleasantly surprised yet slightly disappointed at the same time…

When I read about it, it was listed under Young Adult, Paranormal, Dystopian Romance… so many genres I could tick off my faves list… and yet it seemed a bit ‘lacking’ for want of a better word…

The book is written from Charlaina (Charlie’s) first person POV in the predominant chapters, there are the odd chapters where we get from Max (the mysterious love interest) or Queen Sabara a third person POV scene… the main characters are all around the ages of 17/18, coming of age, with suggestive but no sexual scenes which gives it the perfect setup for a Young Adult audience…
It has a Paranormal ‘twist’ rather than a whole novel based upon the genre… the twist is good and original (for me) where Charlie can understand any language and read people’s gestures… her sister Angelina is mute and has a gift too, and of course we start the book in a scene where we learn what Queen Sabara can do…

This was nothing like the bigger Dystopian novels like The Hunger Games or Divergent… it feels more like Historical Fantasy… a city divided into classes where language is used to dictate the ranking system, ruled by a cruel and heartless queen… it’s only the part when Charlie is reading the story of Ludania’s history to Angelina that I recognised it as post-apocalyptic as it feels like a developing world rather than a collapsed one… although there probably isn’t much difference when I think about it, it just didn't 'feel' Dystopian to me…

The romance in this book was, unusually and unfortunately, not my favourite part, there were probably two scenes that were really good, the rest of the time it was all rather bland and Charlie pushed Max away so many times it was becoming frustrating… there was some physical attraction but I didn’t feel a connection… and then at the end it kind of leaps forward a couple of months and you don’t get any relationship development that I feel this book needs (sigh!)

Anyhoo… the writing was good, no typos or grammar errors… the plot was good and I liked the pace and development, there’s no cliffhanger but it definitely leaves you curious… I enjoyed the characters but I would say we could do with knowing them better, their growth throughout the story was nice, especially Brook... There were some twists I didn’t expect and I don’t know how I missed it, but I didn’t guess who either Max or Zander were until right at the last minute… I enjoyed the story, even if it wasn’t as much as I’d hoped for, and I’ve downloaded the second one and am optimistic that it’s going to get better...

4 Star Review of The Distance Btween Us by Kasie West

I absolutely adored this story... I know, I know! I only gave it 4 stars... I will explain in a moment!...

So, as far as the lead characters went... Caymen was great, I have some really good friends who have a sarcastic streak (and I've been known to throw a remark around myself from time to time) and her dry sense of humour was something I got and loved straight away...
I wasn't too sure about Xander at first, obviously I suspected that he was going to be the love interest so, although he acted a bit jerky I gave him a chance and he turns out to be cool and pretty down to earth, if not just a bit spoiled at times...
I loved all of Caymens friends... Skye more-so than the others but, Henry and Mason too... I did notice, however, that Xander seemed to be lacking in the 'real' friends department and that Richard turns out to be a complete douche... I really wanted to witness Xander hitting that guy in the face but alas it was not to be... his family were awesome though, they come off as being really nice people!

The story was one of those that develops rather than getting all up in your face... her mum's story was a sad one but I must admit she annoyed me quite a lot, keeping secrets and trying to push Caymen into going out with Mason etc... and the whole 'rich guys are bad' thing, I mean I got it, I just didn't agree with it!
I liked how they didn't necessarily fall head over heels in love at first sight, yes they found each other attractive and interesting, but their relationship was gradual... I loved what they did together, Xander walking her to school was so cute, how they spent their time on their 'career days' and the way that they had fun rather than just sucked face all of the time was quite refreshing... considering now it seems to be the norm in these contemporary romance books that they have to spend every second together with their tongues in each others mouths or trying to resist tearing each others clothes off lol!

Of course it all comes to a head in a dramatic climax as they do... and this is where it falters for me...  there could have been so much more detail in the last scenes and unfortunately it seemed to be a bit skimmed over, not necessarily rushed but more like just not filled in if that makes sense... there were so many conversations and scenes that should have been elaborated that I felt a bit cheated!
And I know I say this a lot in my reviews but, if there's not going to be a 'next book' I think these college stories need to have an epilogue... fact!

Anyhoo... I really did enjoy this book (apart from those issues at the end) it was very well written from Caymens POV... It's a Clean, Young Adult, Contemporary Romance with no sexual scenes or bad language... it's cute, flirty, dramatic and emotional with a HEA and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author ;)

4.5 Star Review for Middle Ground by Katie Kacvinsky...

The Sequel to Awaken is another delightful instalment to the trilogy... Katie Kacvinsky's writing just gets better throughout the series, it's action packed and angst filled and a thrill to read... I couldn't get through it fast enough...

Maddie goes through one hell of a magic carpet ride when she gets sent to the Detention Centre (or D.C. as they refer to it) no thanks to her brother Joe... the storyline here is an original one for me and, although it's pretty out there on the believable stakes, it's highly entertaining...

We got to know a few of the character's a bit better... I warmed up to Molly, Scott and Pat (although Pat did get a bit intense), I liked the new character Gabe we meet in the DC, and I really did feel for Justin... you can tell how much Maddie means to him... he's really grown on me in this book but I still wouldn't say he was in my top ten book boyfriends...
And Maddie... well, she infuriated me no end... I suppose this is what makes it so entertaining but there were a few times where I just thought 'really?... why would you do that you idiot!?'

I would say I can't wait to read the final book but, I have heard from various sources that it's not the predictable ending we expect... I don't want to say too much as I don't have all of the facts, but I've heard it described as Allegiance without the death... so, here I go... about to start reading Still Point... look out for my review hopefully by the end of the week...

This is the second book I've read by Katie Kacvinsky and I love her writing... she thinks outside the box and it's really refreshing not to read the same words being regurgitated on the page over and over again in these Young Adult (YA) books...

This has a very dystopian feel to it... and it's hard not to compare it to the world we live in now... although extreme, it seems like this is the route we're heading towards... how many of us are okay with being completely unplugged?
It's set 50 years in the future where, because of all of the crime, violence and terrorism in the world, the government have developed a computer system where society barely has to leave their homes, everything is done online and people are discouraged to communicate with each other face-to-face. Children are made to attend Digital School from their homes until the age of 18. There are programmes for everything... take virtual walks along the beach, if you want to chat with a contact you can see a hologram instead of meeting in person, take virtual classes like self defence etc. There are zip-shuttles and trains instead of cars. And because of the shortage of trees on the planet it's all fake plastic ones and plastic paper...

Maddie is the daughter of the founder and developer of Digital School... the story comes from her POV and as a character I liked her but she does get a little frustrating at times...
Justin is the son of extreme radicals who are fighting against a digital life... he was pretty hard to read, I liked him a lot but I didn't fall in love with him straight away...
A star crossed lovers story, but it's not all cliché and predictable... they meet in an online study group and Justin persuades Maddie to come to a face-to-face one, and that's when the adventure begins....
Maddie never really knows how Justin feels about her until later in the book because he tries to keep himself at a distance, she's always had a rebellious side, but she's been on probation and grounded for the last two years and it's Justin's words and actions that 'Awaken' her out of her digital slumber... he's very focused and intent on bringing the DS system down and I thought it was pretty obvious why his group pursued her, so I was kind of taken aback that she hadn't figured it out and got so upset when it was revealed...

Maddie's parents are an odd coupling, it's hard to imagine why they would be together at all since they're so different... Her dad is the villain of the story and so far he's not even likeable... her mother is a different kettle of fish... she encourages and embraces non-digital things...
Justin's parents are cool and you can see why he's so passionate about their cause.

It's well written, a few typos, but overall it's the content that gets you hooked... it's more fantasy themed and both the romance and storyline was slow off the mark, but it was interesting and intriguing.
This could be enjoyed by a young teen audience as there are no sexual scenes or use of inappropriate language, they (finally after bated breath) make out a lot in the last quarter of the book but it goes no further than touching waists and necks and skin ogling!
It doesn't exactly leave you on a cliff-hanger but it does leave you wanting more, the ending confused me a bit... I'm looking forward to the next book in the series Middle Ground... I have it waiting on my kindle and I can't wait to see what happens...

5 Star Review of At Any Moment by Brenna Aubrey

Hello again... as promised in yesterday's post Bookish Thoughts Of The Week here's my review of the series of books I've read this week...

This last book was by far the best one in the trilogy... I'd like to summarise them all here but I'll try not to give any spoilers away :)

After reading book one (At Any Price) I grew to really like the characters in this series, it was nice, quirky and nerdy, but it leads you into a false sense of security... because Wham! when you're plunged into the second book (At Any Turn) it's like a totally different story from the one you started out with... It was dark and depressing, and Adam's side of the story left us all confused and wondering WTH was going on (which is depicted nicely to Mia in the third instalment) but I stuck with it because I wanted to see how Mia and Adam's story panned out...

At Any Moment was a very touching finale to the series... on the whole, these books take you through the journey of a couple who fall in love and come into tragedy early on in their relationship... we watch their struggles from each of their points of view and most of the time it's really frustrating, but the way the story ends is beautifully done... we see them heal as individuals and then come together and reunite as a couple once more... their HEA is one that will stay with me, and it's one to measure against in books to come...

If you read Brenna's comments on Goodreads there's a link to sign up for emails... when you do, you get a few extra scenes from Adam's POV from the first book which I really enjoyed, and a brief, but nice, 5 year epilogue that is downloadable in PDF format...

You have to read all three of these as a series, they are not standalone's, although the first book doesn't have much of a cliff hanger. I'm so pleased I stuck with these books and can't wait to read more from this author! :)

Review of First Comes Love by Katie Kacvinsky

4.5 Stars For This Lovely Story of Firsts...

'First' of all let me congratulate Katie Kacvinsky on writing such a charming, heartfelt and adorable book!

The writing was good and easy to read, there were a few typos but it doesn't spoil the story. 

It's one of those books that, after chapter 3 you just can't put it down... as I work full time, it took me two evenings to get through so it's not a lengthy read but it's not a novella either.

I loved the main characters: 

*Gray... oh lordy, Blue Eyed Gray... I felt his angst and totally understood the way he withdrew himself, the way he didn't want to let anyone in... and I loved the way he slowly let Dylan into his life and she helped him start to live again.

*Dylan... I really liked Dylan, she was a little 'too' quirky for me at times, but I loved the way she was laid back yet restless at the same time, she broke down Gray's walls and helped him come back out of his shell... I liked her randomness and the ideas she had about living life.
These two were such an adorable couple... I was rooting for them from the start.

This is also a story of a family going through tragedy, it was tackled with sensitivity, and after reading the Authors Note about her inspiration for writing First Comes Love (you should read that too) you can see that it's been written from experiences as well as imagination... and it totally works!

The content is suitable for Teens, there are suggestions of sex but no graphic descriptions of any kind... there is no bad language, the boys are cute, the girls are superficial, but Dylan is cool!... I mean she plays Miss Packman and listens to Counting Crows, you can't get much cooler than that haha!... and on that note... there's a playlist too... I love when an author adds a playlist! :)

Anyway... I recommend this to any Young Adult readers out there and can't wait to read Katie's book Awaken... if it's anything like this one it should be awesome!

3.5 Star Review for Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick

Good but no Hush Hush...

 

I was really looking forward to reading something else by Becca Fitzpatrick because I loved her Hush Hush series...

The writing was good and descriptive... I did find a few typos which I don't usually pick up on, but I have to say a couple of times it made me pause.

I liked the story, it was gritty with lots of suspense while also having that chicklit element in it... I guessed correctly on 'who done it' pretty early on, but there were some twists and turns that changed my mind a few times, I wouldn't say it was predictable as such, but it wasn't too hard to know where it was going... there were too many clues and the dynamic between the characters gives too much away for you to be able to say 'no way... I would not have guessed that'...

 

The story is written from Britt's POV... I would have loved an insight chapter from Jude's side of things...

I know some reviewers have said that they didn't like Britt but, she grew on me... I think because she depended on her dad, brother and boyfriend put people off her, but she was sensitive, kind at heart and not entirely a brat... throughout the whole of the book she tried her hardest to be strong and survive the ordeal she went through, contributing to their survival and sensibly second guessing her feelings.
And Jude... I had such a bookcrush on him... I shall be looking for my own seasnail next time I'm at the beach ha!

I have no idea why Britt was best friends with Korby, she was such an awful character... I even preferred Calvin, but again I don't know what the obsession was with him either... according to Britt's thoughts and memories there were more bad instances than good throughout their short relationship... I think what it comes down to is that she'd known these two characters for most of her life and, ironically, she feels for them because of the way their parents treat them and cares about them enough to want to make them happy.

 

The romance that unfurls between the two main characters was slow and sweet, obviously because of the circumstances they get to know each other, their relationship is a bit rocky throughout, but I was pretty happy with the ending... that was probably my favourite part... but then again I'm a sucker for a HEA.

 

So, although enjoyable this just didn't hit that mark of awesomeness I was expecting, it didn't have that spark to make it into my favourites list... I think I'd like to read more of Becca's Paranormal Romance stuff... this was entertaining, it just wasn't her best :)

This Week - My World in Books...

This week in my world I have been tweaking the blog (I'm getting there, bare with me haha), I've been creating, linking and promoting my social media accounts... let me tell you it has been no mean feat but it's been lots of fun and hopefully it will all be worth it :)

In other news, I have joined my local gym to get some of that lingering Christmas poundage off, it's going well, I haven't injured myself yet... and I have my first Piloxing class to attend next Wednesday so wish me luck ha!

Anyhoo... I haven't really had a whole lot of time to do the thing I love the most this week - get lost in a world of words... but I've managed a few and my reading list goes as follows:

And last but not least... I frequently post links on Twitter and share my bargain hunting finds... if there's a book on sale or I find a free one that looks really good I usually download them but don't always read them straight away... In fact, a lot of them sit on my Kindle for months, but when it comes time to read it and I go back to refresh myself on The Blurb, it's usually a nice surprise that I've saved myself some money...
